U. S. House Probably Passes a Bill Harmful to Immigrants According to American Immigration Lawyers Association(AILA), on December 8, the House Judiciary Committee passed the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (H.R. 4437), introduced by Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI). The bill is expected to be taken up on the House floor on Wednesday, December 14. House leadership is on a mission to pass this enforcement-only legislation before the December 17 adjournment. AILA said that this bill is misguided and harmful to immigrants. It contains provisions that would: criminalize unlawful presence; strip the courts of much of their remaining jurisdiction over immigration matters; gut the due process rights of aliens, permanent residents, and United States citizens; expand expedited removal; broaden the definition of alien smuggling to include family members, employers, and immigrant advocates; expand the definition of aggravated felony; create new grounds of deportability and inadmissibility; increase mandatory detention; militarize the border; and place limitations on eligibility for naturalization. Under HR 4437, the government will be allowed to prosecute almost any American who has regular contact with the undocumented immigrants and 7 million undocumented immigrant workers will be driven out. Moreover, HR 4437 will create an Employment Eligibility Verification System (EEVS) that could severely limits workers' claims, including prohibiting class action lawsuits against the government, and will displace millions of documented workers-U.S. citizens and legal residents alike. AILA finally said that HR 4437 is an attack on U.S. Immigration Policy, not an answer, and that i mmediate action is needed to defeat this enforcement-only immigration legislation.
