US Legal Permanent Residents Distribution in 2005

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people migrated to the USA, legally and illegally. As announced by the department of homeland security, a total of 1,222,273 persons became legal permanent residents (Green Card) of the United States, whereas this number was 957,883 in 2004 and 705,827 in 2003. About two thirds (66%) lived in the United States when they received the green card. 58% were granted green card based on a family relationship with a US citizenship. The leading countries of birth of legal permanent residents were Mexico (161,445), India (84,681), China (69,967), and Philippines (60,748).

The biggest destination of new legal immigrants was California, attracting 21% of persons becoming legal permanent residents in 2005. Other leading states of residence included New York (12%), Florida (11%), Texas (8.5%), New Jersey (5.0%) and Illinois (4.7%). These states represented 62% of new immigrants in 2005. The leading metropolitan statistical areas of destination of new legal permanent residents were New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island (15%), and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana (8.8%), followed by Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach, Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, and Washington-Arlington-Alexandria-Rockville.
