Happy Memorial Weekend! Observed on the last Monday of May each year, Memorial Day falls on May 28th in 2007. Originally called Decoration Day, it is a day of remembrance for our nation’s fallen heroes who lost their lives in military service. The official proclamation date of Memorial Day is on May 5, 1868, when General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic declared the day as “as a day for strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, or hamlet churchyard in the land...It is the purpose of the commander-in-chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept from year to year while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of the departed." Over the years, this holiday has gained popularity and became the general day of commemorating fallen soldiers. There are numerous accounts of the actual origins of the holiday as more than two dozen cities and towns laid claim to the title of its birthplace. The truth of the matter is that Memorial Day actually arose out of several beginnings. In order to make things more manageable, however, President Lyndon Johnson officially proclaimed Waterloo, NY to be its originating location in May of 1966. After all, the fact of the matter remains that Memorial Day should not be about disputes, but rather should be about coming together to honor the servicemen and women who sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy here in the United States. As a federal holiday, Memorial Day is celebrated across the country, with a national moment of remembrance occurring at 3 PM local time on that day. In addition, American flags are flown at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Because it is a national holiday, many people use the opportunity to spend it with family and friends by indulging in picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. It is not unusual for most to consider Memorial Day and Labor Day “bookend days,” where the former would signal the beginning of summer and the latter would indicate the end of summer. Memorial Day is especially poignant because of the significance it represents. As we remember those who gave their all for our liberty and freedom, we should also take a moment to reflect upon the opportunities we have in our adopted land.
