Workers' Immigration Status Verification may become Mandatory According to some officials and recently released documents, the Homeland Security Department anticipates that employers will be required to verify the immigration status of their workers. In its 2007 budget, the DHS already requested additional funding to establish a mandatory employment eligibility verification program. Currently, companies can voluntarily check the legal status of workers through the Basic Pilot employment eligibility verification system managed by USCIS. About 5,000 companies participate in the program now. However, the DHS expects Congress to pass a temporary worker program this year and to make it mandatory for employers to check the immigration status of employees, said Bill Strassberger, a USCIS spokesman. It can be imagined that if a system verifying workers' immigration status is put into place, both employers and workers would make more efforts to get the issue settled. We sincerely hope that authorized workers can be hired without undue bureaucratic delays at that time.
