GOP Says Yes to Bush's Guest Worker Program

According to a Washington Times report, the Republican National Committee voted to support President Bush's guest worker program, with only one member vote opposing the resolution. This paves the way for Mr. Bush to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform initiative.

Last November, as part of comprehensive immigration reform, Mr. Bush proposed the creation of a new temporary worker program. Under his program, undocumented immigrants would be allowed to get three-year work visas. They could extend that for an additional three years, but would then have to return to their home countries for a year to apply for a new work permit.

Last month, the House passed an immigration-enforcement bill that did not include a guest-worker program. The Senate is expected to take up immigration legislation early this year, and leaders expect it will contain some sort of guest-worker program and possibly a path to U.S. citizenship for illegal aliens.
