Dancing, Surfing, and the Pursuit of Happiness The AILA 2008 Midyear CLE Conference was held on the Big Island, Hawaii on Friday, January 18. AILA, or the American Immigration Lawyers Association, is the “national association of immigration lawyers established to promote justice, advocate for fair and reasonable immigration law and policy, advance the quality of immigration and nationality law and practice, and enhance the professional development of its members.” The main purpose of the Midyear Conference was to provide continuing education to AILA’s members about the practice of immigration law. About 100 immigration attorneys from top firms attended the conference, including two of Zhang & Associates’ attorneys, Jerry Zhang and Joe Zhou. The Conference Attorney Zhang and Attorney Zhou learned about the latest news in employment-based immigration law, including the following:
Attorney Zhang and Attorney Zhou also spoke at one meeting and shared some of their own practice tips with other top immigration attorneys. Hawaii The immigration attorneys who attended the conference also had the chance to enjoy the natural beauty and rich culture of Hawaii. Hawaii, the “Aloha State,” was the 50th state admitted to the union. It consists of eight main islands: Niihau, Hawaii, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii. Its 124 smaller islands are not fit for human habitation. Hawaii’s eight islands are all volcanic, and to this day Hawaii contains some of the biggest volcanoes in the world, both active and dormant. The only U.S. state in the tropics, Hawaii is well known for its stunning natural beauty, including palm trees, coral beaches, lush greenery, and brightly colored flowers. Polynesians first settled on Hawaii sometime in the first millennium C.E. (the exact dates remain unknown). Most of the settlers came from the Marquesas/Tahiti area. The first known European explorer arrived there in 1778, and after that, other Europeans and Americans traveled there as well. To this day, Hawaii has an exceptionally diverse population, comprising Caucasians, Asian Americans, and native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, among others. In fact, much of Hawaii’s population claims mixed ethnicities, so precise racial identification is difficult. Outdoor activities like dancing and surfing are major pastimes in Hawaii. Hawaii is also well known for hula dancing, which was traditionally used in religious ceremonies, with a distinct meaning assigned to each hula movement. The tradition of hula dancing is still alive today, although a more modern style has arisen in conjunction with the traditional style. Attorney Zhang and Attorney Zhou enjoyed their time in Hawaii very much.
