Martin Luther King Holiday on January 16th

With the approach of Martin Luther King Day on this Monday, January 16th, Zhang & Associates would like to honor the memory of this amazing man who has become America’s icon for peace and justice.

Born in 1929, Martin Luther King spent his life fighting for an end to discrimination in America. Despite being arrested more than twenty times and assaulted at least four times, King continued to lead peace protests and marches, help increase African American voter registration, write thought-provoking texts, and deliver inspiring speeches, such as the famous “I Have a Dream” speech encouraging equality among men. His efforts raised public awareness for the plight of African Americans, motivated many individuals, and contributed immeasurably to the American Civil Rights Movement.

King’s promotion of equal treatment for all people also highlighted issues of diversity in the US, supported tolerance for different cultures and ideas, and made way for enhanced immigrant rights, for which all immigrants should be deeply grateful. Prompted by the Civil Rights Movement, the Congress passed laws during that period ending discrimination in immigration quotas against third world countries. To this day, organizations established due to King’s influences, such as the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, continue to devote their work to advancing the rights of minorities, the economically disadvantaged, and immigrants and refugees.

Named Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1963 and winning the Noble Peace Prize in 1964, King solidified his status as a symbolic leader and a world figure. Sadly, he was assassinated in 1968, concluding his pursuit for a society without hate and injustice. However, King had empowered minorities and immigrants with opportunities toward fulfilling our American dreams, and his vision for harmony and fairness will continue to guide us in the future.
