NIW Success Story: From Initial Contact to Approval in Just 6 Months Dr. Yu* contacted our firm during one of our busiest times ever: right in the middle of June 2007, when many of our clients were rushing to file their national interest waiver (NIW) and I-485 petitions. Like most of our NIW clients at that time, Dr. Yu hoped to file her petition before the imminent fee increases took effect—and while visa numbers were theoretically still available for China-born EB-2 aliens. Initially, Dr. Yu took advantage of our free evaluation service, sending Attorney Jerry Zhang a copy of her CV. Dr. Yu had obtained a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from a U.S. university. For the past two years, she had been working at a small pharmaceutical company in Kentucky, first as a postdoctoral researcher and now as a full-time research scientist. It happened so fast that when Dr. Yu received the initial notice via email, she assumed it was a mistake, because an approval at that point seemed “too good to be true.” “I just can't believe that mine was approved so fast,” she said. But it was no mistake. Just a few days later, Dr. Yu had the official approval notice in her hands. Her I-485 application, filed concurrently with her NIW, is currently pending. Now, Dr. Yu can look forward to the day when her I-485 is approved, and she receives her green card.
