Happy New Year

Champagne, confetti, kissing at midnight, and the big ball in New York City’s Times Square—all these things are strongly associated with New Year’s Eve in the United States.

On December 31, Americans throughout the country gather with friends and stay up late to toast the new year. About 400,000 travel to New York City to watch an enormous crystal ball in Times Square make its descent—the bottom of which indicates the official arrival of the New Year in Eastern Standard Time.

The next day, many Americans relax at home, watching parades and football on TV. Another popular tradition is to make New Year’s resolutions: promises to oneself about improving one’s behavior in the new year. Popular resolutions include exercising more, eating better, and quitting smoking. Unfortunately, it seems to be equally common for New Year’s resolutions to be broken. However, the tradition persists despite its shaky track record, and many people continue to make their resolutions with the best of intentions.

Of course, celebrating the New Year is not limited to the United States or the Western world. Many different countries have New Year’s celebrations, whether on January 1 or on another date. The Chinese New Year is celebrated every year on the new moon of the first lunar month, usually between January 21 and February 21. The Eastern Orthodox Church’s civil new year, also commonly called the “Old New Year,” is celebrated on January 14. The Iranian New Year, called Norouz, falls on the day that contains the precise vernal equinox—this year, March 20. And the Islamic New Year falls on a different day each year; in fact, in 2008, there will be two of them.

As is the case with so many holidays, only the individual traditions are specific to each individual culture. The ideas behind celebrating the arrival of a new year are universal: looking back on how the past year has been; wondering how the next year will be, and how to make it better; celebrating the continuation of life for another year.

This year, at Zhang & Associates, we have many things to celebrate. Most importantly, we celebrate the fact that many of our clients have continued to experience success in their goals to live and work in the United States. We also celebrate our clients whose cases have yet to be approved, and look forward to continuing to work with them in the coming year.

We at Zhang & Associates would like to wish all of our clients a wonderful new year filled with even more joy and prosperity than 2007. Happy New Year!
