He is an active member of the Hawaii State Bar Association. Bennett has also passed the New York State Bar Exam and has been admitted to practice law in New York.
At Zhang & Associates, Bennett focuses his practice on National Interest Waiver, EB1A, EB1B, I-485 Adjustment of Status, and Consulate Processing cases and has gained valuable experience in these areas. He has also worked closely with Zhang & Associates on various projects to lobby Congress for comprehensive immigration reform.
Before working at Zhang and Associates, Bennett completed a summer internship in Honolulu with the Law Offices of Jack Schweigert, PLC, assisting Mr. Schweigert with legal research on a wide array of constitutional, evidentiary, and contractual issues. He also worked as a research assistant for Professor Jon Van Dyke, at the University of Hawaii. In this capacity, he researched international ocean law issues relating to the Takeshima/Dokdo Island dispute between Japan and South Korea. In addition, he helped Professor Van Dyke on issues ranging from successor corporate liability law to the constitutionality of a vehicular advertising ban. Before working for Professor Van Dyke, he developed his legal research and writing skills as an intern at the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii in the summer of 2004.
While at the William S. Richardson School of Law, Bennett earned top grades in a wide variety of classes, including Refugee and Asylum Law, Constitutional Law I and II, International Law, International Intellectual Property, International Ocean Law, U.S.-Japan Business Transactions, Law and Society in Japan, and Asian Comparative Legal Studies. He received the Best Appellate Brief Award in his appellate advocacy class during his first year of law school. During his second year of law school, Bennett received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in both Law and Society in Japan and Intellectual Property, which is awarded to the highest grade in each class.
Prior to enrolling in law school, Bennett pursued a double major in Japanese Language and Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a 3.9 cumulative grade point average. As a result of his language studies, Bennett received the National Security Education Program Scholarship, which allowed him to attend Obirin University in Tokyo during his junior year of college. He has also lived in Aomori, Japan and Shizuoka, Japan and he is proficient in Japanese. When he is not at the offices, Bennett enjoys political activism and documentaries.
