Temporary Change in USCIS Policy to Adapt to Covid-19

Due to the spread of Covid-19, USCIS has decided to temporarily close offices and suspend in person services in those offices until April 7. The closure might extend beyond April 7 depending on nationwide circumstances. The services that will be delayed will include all interviews, naturalization ceremonies, asylum appointments and biometric appointments. Services that does not necessitate face to face contact will continue as normal. For those whose scheduled appointments were impacted, there will be automatic rescheduling once regular operations resume. “Individuals who had InfoPass appointments with a Field Office must reschedule through the USCIS Contact Center.” To reach the USCIS Contact Center, click here. If you do not receive a new appointment notice by 90 days, please contact USCIS via 800-375-5283. USCIS will also provide emergency services for unique situations.

For those I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) applicants who had their biometric appointments delayed due to USCIS closure, USCIS will process their applications using previously submitted biometrics. This practice will continue until USCIS resume regular operations.

In addition, USCIS has adopted a policy to provide flexibility to those who has received a Request of Evidence (RFE) and Notices of Intent to Deny (NOID) during this time. Specifically, deadlines for RFE and NOID issued between March 1, 2020 and May 1, 2020 will be extended for 60 days. Furthermore, Notices of Appeal or Motion (I-290B) issued and dated between March 1, 2020 and May 1, 2020 will be accepted if filed within 60 days, instead of the normal 33 days.

Despite policies aimed at stopping the spread of the virus, the most important thing is for the general public to exercise healthy and hygienic practices. Be sure to wash your hands often and for at least 20 seconds, practice social distancing by avoiding close contact with groups of people, avoid touching your face, cover your mouth if you have to cough, and stay at home if you are sick.
